We no longer build or manage what used to be known as council houses but we do play an important role in enabling social housing.
We work closely with social landlords to assess demand, identify appropriate sites and lobby for funding. Where we own land suitable for social housing our policy
is to make it available without charge wherever practical.
Our planning policy is to require many developments of more than 3 homes in villages, or 6 in towns, to include 30%, 1 in every 3, affordable housinghomes. This has
become a national standard.
Through these measures we have enabled the provision of 270 affordable homes across the district over the last four years. We have given approval for a further 682
through the planning process.
As with all other housing developments, the siting and design of affordable homes will continue to be subject to planning rules which respect the unique character of
our district.
We shall continue to champion the provision of affordable homes for local people of all ages who need them.
