Vote No To AV on 5th May

On 5 May, there will be a referendum on changing our voting system from First Past The Post to Alternative Vote.

First Past the Post; Our Current System. To Retain It Vote No To AV

Everyone gets one vote. You put and 'X' next to the cnadidate you want to support. The candidate with the most votes wins.

Alternative Vote(AV)

Instead of using an 'X' voters rank candidates in order of preference uisng '1,2 3' and so on. If one candidate has more than 50% of the first preference votes, they are elected outright. If that doesn't happen, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated and the second, third or later preferences of the people who voted are allocated to the remaining candidates.
If still no candidate has a majority of votes, the next lowest candidate is eliminated and their votes are redistributed. This process keeps on occurring until one candidate has over 50% of the votes which have not been discounted.

Five Good Reasons To Vote No To AV

1. It's unfair

With First Past the Post (our current system), everybody gets one vote. But under AV, supporters of extreme parties like the BNP would get their vote counted many times, while other people's vote would only be counted once.

2. It doesn't work

Rather than the candidate with the most votes winning under AV the person who finishes third could be elected.

3. It's expensive

Calculaing the results would be a long, complicated process, which could even require special counting machines; and it would cost the taxpayer millions.

4. It's discredited

Only 3 countries in the world use AV, Fiji, Australia and Papua New Guinea and both Fiji and Australia want to get rid of it.

5. No One wants it

Even the 'Yes' campaigners don't want AV; they see it as a convenient stepping stone to even more reforms.
